Denim Tips from Glamour Mag!!

Fashion Designer Henry Holland on…

How to fashionably rough-up a pair of jeans…“Wear them endlessly and they actually mould to your body - try not to wash them for as long as is hygienic!”

On revving up a tired denim jacket…“I have a bit of an obsession with cutting the sleeves of old items so I would probably turn it into a gilet, and if I was feeling very on-trend I might add some studs!”

GLAMOUR's Fashion Director Vanessa Gillingham on…

How to customise an old pair of jeans…“It depends on the shape, but you could roll up a boyfriend jean or chop the bottoms off a straight-leg style.”

On revving up a tired denim jacket…“To reinvent your denim jacket wear it with a vintage dress or chop the sleeves off and make it sleeveless.”

hoe Designer Hetty Rose on…

How to customise an old pair of jeans… “It’s easy to achieve a distressed look by rubbing [your jeans] with a pumice stone on certain areas of the legs (thighs, bum, top front pockets), but not too hard so build it up by doing it carefully. Simply pin brooches onto front pockets, or a cluster of them would be lovely.”

On revving up a tired denim jacket…“You can buy studs which are easy to attach to a collar for impact. Or go for vintage brooches and sequins. Fold up the sleeves and make a feature of the cuffs.”

Fashion Designer William Tempest on…

How to customise an old pair of jeans…“Get a pair of skinny jeans and give them a tie dye treatment in your washing machine with some string and dylon fabric dye.”

On revving up a tired denim jacket…“Get an oversized jacket, cut off the sleeves, and let the edges fray!”

Fashion Designer Daniela Felder on…

How to customise an old pair of jeans… “Dye the jeans black or charcoal grey to make them look more modern, or go to a beads store and buy bold metal beads(gold or silver) and stitch them to the hem or on the pocket line. If you attach metals to the hem, you have to use a lot of beads on the bottom and going into nothing towards mid thigh for dramatic effect, whereas on the pocket it looks better if they are in a row (or two) along the pocket line.

On revving up a tired denim jacket… “Cut off sleeves and leave them raw edge, or get metallic clothes spray and spray it silver or gold...throw over your casual black or beige daytime outfit and you will be ready for the night!”

Shoe Designer Manolo Blahnik on…

Investment buys and style-mileage… “I know women who have been wearing my shoes for 25 years, and the satin is shredded but they still look really good. I like things that people lust. One lady I know has her Chanel jacket mended and mended and mended, it's fraying at the arm but it doesn't matter. If you spend, it'll last.” So DO save your pennies for that dream denim jacket and we bet it'll end up in the museum of your stylish youth!

GLAMOUR.com Editor Natasha Aitken on...

How to update your high street jeans... "This season acid-wash skinny jeans have been all the rage. Keep your pair up-to-date and unique - sew on zips for a faux-pocket effect. Not good at sewing? Head to New Look and snap up these jeans that have just landed in stores."

Vintage 1 Denim Designer Philippe Naouri on…

How to customise an old pair of jeans…”The older the jeans are, the better, as these can usually be ripped more easily to give a real vintage worn-in look - which has a more rock’n’roll edge and will give your jeans their own personality.”

On revving up a tired denim jacket…“Cut off the arms to create a chic biker look.”

Denim Boutique Owner & Stylist Donna Ida on…

How to customise an old pair of jeans…”The cheapest and edgiest way to customise is to take a knife and some paint to your favourite old jeans. Use a pumice stone or sander to distress the knee and hip areas. Or add a tougher edge with studs which you can buy from any haberdashery store. Dot them along pocket edges for a cool detail.”

On revving up a tired denim jacket…“ Spark up your old jacket with retro patches (think Kiss, AC/DC, Motley Crew) or go pretty with rainbow embroidery and sweet flowers.”

CEO and Creative Director of GUESS? Inc. Paul Marciano on...

Revving up a tired denim jacket…Give your denim jacket a new life by adding special details like chains as epaulettes or embroidery or special buttons... Alternatively, you can customise it with your favourite transfer motif or embellish it with diamante applications or jewelled buttons."

My-Wardrobe.com Womenswear Buyer Joanne Watkinson on…

How to customise an old pair of jeans… “Wearing lace or polka dot tights underneath your distressed boyfriend jeans instantly updates and personalises them, the hint of hosiery through the rips and tears hauls your denim into autumn/winter style.

On revving up a tired denim jacket…“Cropping your jacket makes it the ultimate layering piece, cut off the hem and wear over this season’s sequinned dresses, for a quirky alternative to a blazer.”

Model and Burlesque Dancer Dita Von Teese on…

Adding personal touches to your wardrobe… “I like to put beautiful vintage brooches on my clothes to make them special and shop around for things that are different.”

Why not make like Dita and add clusters of brooches to your denim jacket for a luxe finish?
